Legends’ Myrtle Beach Performers featured on CBS’ The Early Show

Rise and Shine!! Legends In Concert’s Marilyn Monroe and Elvis tributes, Stacey Whitton and Nathan Belt, appeared this morning on CBS’ “The Early Show” with weather anchor, Dave Price.

Dave Price was broadcasting live for CBS all morning from Myrtle Beach’s newly unveiled Boardwalk project. The City of Myrtle Beach’s project was recently completed for the 2010 summer season along the Grand Strand. Check out these live webcams of Myrtle Beach’s newest addition.

Elvis and Marilyn mingled with the capacity-crowd, signed autographs, and even chatted up “The Early Show” morning weather anchor. Nathan and Stacey garnered a large amount of attention with their uncanny likenesses to Elvis and Marilyn and had hundreds of early risers clamoring for photo opportunities.

Nathan shared the crowd’s enthusiasm and stated “It was a great way to kick-off a summer of ‘firsts’ in Myrtle Beach and interact with fans!”.  The new Boardwalk will not be the only ‘first’ for Myrtle Beach this summer as Legends In Concert’s Surfside Beach location offers up tributes to Martina McBride and The Beatles for the first time ever at this location. In fact, this is the first time in Legends In Concert’s history that a Martina McBride tribute will venture on to a Legends stage. The Blues Brothers are also scheduled to return to Myrtle Beach for the first time this year as they return with their fan-favorite brash and unique flavor of humor. Finally, the first time offerings just keep rolling in from the Myrtle Beach location as a week long celebration of Michael Jackson’s life is planned in conjunction with the limited engagement appearance of Michael Jackson tributesthis summer. More details will be forthcoming on the “Michael Jackson” week. Stay tuned to our website and Facebook pages for the latest news.

Remember the Time

Las Vegas, Nevada

The thumping beats of “Billie Jean” started up. On the dark stage, a spotlight illuminated the performer wearing a black hat and a single glove. The crowd erupted with loud cheers and applause.

But it wasn’t Michael Jackson — at least not the real one. Still, it was about as close as it gets.

William Bostick had been perfecting his Michael Jackson tribute for more than a quarter of a century and was an integral part of “Legends in Concert” for many years. He was so good, in fact, that the superstar had befriended Bostick after one of his tribute shows and offered him some tips.

Though William had always put on a great show, that October night in 1998 was different. He was moonwalking his heart out on the stage at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace – for the real Michael Jackson in the audience.

Sue Cirone, then a captain at the casino, recalls hearing from a coworker that morning “that Michael Jackson might be coming to the ‘Legends’ show that night. And he said that I might want to bring my daughter to meet him. She was 9 years old and a huge fan. She was really excited, and nervous, too. Everyone was.”

“No one was sure that Michael was going to show up, but it was a real possibility,” remembers Jillian Hrushowy, a production manager for ‘Legends’ for the past 15 years. “The band was sitting in their places, getting ready for the 7:30 show, and a stagehand told us, ‘Yes, it’s true, he’s here.’ Well, right then you could absolutely feel the electricity in the room.”

Jackson, wearing a signature black hat and dark sunglasses, had quietly slipped into booth 206 after the lights went down, and was completely surrounded by his entourage. “I have never seen that much undercover security here, ever,” says Sue, who’s worked at the Imperial Palace for 29 years.

Sue has witnessed the real Kenny Rogers sing at a “Legends” show (“Nobody in the audience knew it was the real Kenny!” she says, laughing). Other high-profile celebrities like Shania Twain and the Righteous Brothers have dropped by to see themselves portrayed on stage. But nobody matched the star wattage of Michael Jackson. “He was certainly the most celebrated personality that we’ve ever had come to the show,” says Jillian.

And even though the audience didn’t have a clue that the Gloved One was in the same room -– “Only the people who worked at the I.P. and at ‘Legends’ knew that he was there,” says Sue – they sensed that there was something different about this performance.

“There was definitely a buzz in the room,” Sue recalls.

Jillian agrees. “The band – everyone in the show – worked their butts off that night. The whole place was on fire. It was amazing!”

Michael Jackson stayed to watch his impersonator sing, twirl and of course, moonwalk, through five songs: “Remember the Time,” “Thriller,” “Jam,” “Heal the World” and “Billie Jean.”

“For ‘Heal the World,’ there was a scrim with a globe projected on it,” remembers Zach Thalheimer, a technician for “Legends” who had a bird’s-eye view of the show. “I remember looking out and seeing Michael pointing up at it and him saying, ‘That’s cool.’”

To memorialize that eventful night, Sue has a picture of her daughter and her friends with Jackson. Thalheimer didn’t get a photograph, but he did come down from his perch high above the stage to mingle with excited fans. “I definitely got a bit giddy,” he says. “And I just thought it was really special that he would take the time to come see William.”

In fact, the superstar later met up with the performer and congratulated him on a great performance. “William told me that Jackson was very proud and very pleased,” says Jillian.

But when she thinks back to that fateful night, Jillian does wish she could change one thing. As production manager, it was she who had filled out a comp slip with Jackson’s name on it. “I was going through some stuff a while ago and saw that slip that I’d saved,” she says. “I thought, ‘What will I ever want this for?’ Boy, do I regret throwing it away.”

After the passing of Michael Jackson on June 25, the performer portraying the King of Pop in “Legends” became even more important. Currently that honor belongs to Damian Brantley, a 10-year veteran of the tribute artist genre, who introduced Foxwoods’ audiences to the tribute show this summer at the casino property in Connecticut.

Damian, who is now headlining “Legends,” still gets very emotional recalling that June day. “We happened to be rehearsing my set in the Fox Theater and were in the middle of ‘Billie Jean.’ One of the techs came by and told us that Michael was gone. It seemed so out of left field.”

But as they say, the show must go on. “I’m here to help audiences remember Michael and highlight the memories that they hold dearest,” Damian says. “That’s my job, to recreate the highlights. I’m just playing my very small role in helping his legacy live on.”

And most important, he notes, is honoring Michael’s memory in a respectful way. “With his passing, there are people coming out of the woodwork calling themselves tribute artists, when in fact, they are turning it into a parody,” Damian laments. “At ‘Legends,’ we have handled the situation delicately; we have been doing this a long time and I do my utmost to do a respectable rendition of the man.”

Legends continues to bring the Michael Jackson experience to thousands

Damian Brantley as Michael JacksonIn the wake of the untimely and sad passing away of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Legends In Concert  plans to continue to forge ahead with dignified and respectful tributes to the “gloved one” as we have done meticulously in the past.

Legends In Concert will continue to provide thousands of adoring Michael Jackson fans with an endearing and energetic tribute to his legacy.  Michael Jackson tribute artists have been a staple of the Legends In Concert family for several years. Artists such as E’Casanova ,  William Hall , and Damian Brantley have provided Legends In Concert show-goers with electric renditions of all Michael’s signature moves and vocals that is unsurpassed in the field of  tribute artistry.

With the news of Michael Jackson’s recent passing, several Legends In Concert performers and managers have reflected on how the King of Pop influenced them. Dennis Inman who impersonates The Temptations says. “He really changed the visual aspect of the industry with epic videos he did a lot of firsts.”   “I had the cartoon Jackson Five the “Off the Wall” record when Michael had an afro the size of a basketball,” Bucky Heard who impersonates Jake Blues says. Legends In Concert – known for its live celebrity impersonator shows – does not have a Michael Jackson impersonator in its Myrtle Beach show, but has asked its Elton John impersonator, Mitch Adams of Las Vegas, to pay homage to the King of Pop in one of his shows that started Thursday night in Myrtle Beach, said regional general manager Chris Beattie.  Beattie added “We will continue to pay homage [to Michael Jackson] at least for a week, but we haven’t had time to think about what we will do in addition.”

“Legends in Concert has featured remarkably talented Michael Jackson tribute artists in our shows worldwide for many years and we look forward to continuing the legacy of his music and his spirit. ” said Brian Brigner, chief operating officer of On Stage Entertainment, creators of the world’s longest running tribute show. “We have the utmost respect for Michael Jackson and have always prided ourselves on being dedicated to the presentation of entertainment featuring the highest quality tribute artist replication in the industry.  We are humbled to share the body of work he left behind with his millions of devoted fans, and are confident we can inspire yet another generation of Michael enthusiasts by sharing his gift.”

Legends In Concert’s upcoming July line-up at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, CT will feature an exciting Michael Jackson tribute (Damian Brantley); an appearance scheduled before the passing of America’s most iconic pop star.

Backstage

Makeup, costumes, Jeopardy, that last minute bite of food, welcome backstage to Legends in Concert.  I typically arrive about 30 minutes prior to show time, so already the Legends, singers, dancers have already begun preps for the opening number. They are busy with costumes, make up, hair, it is a busy atmosphere, and sometimes you hear the “hey do you have any foundation?” I mentioned Jeopordy, that’s what is usually on in the Green Room entertaining those who walk by and those just taking a minute to relax.  It’s quite amazing how much your fellow co-workers know.  The volume on the TV is sometimes drowned out by the hair dryer, someone tuning a guitar, and yes there is laughing. We are in show business so you have to keep a smile.

It is overall a fun environment with a great group of people to work with. I believe one of the best parts about my job is the people. I enjoy everyone I work for, and with.  Trust me there is never a dull moment backstage and many of us have made life long friends with our fellow co-workers backstage. I did know several of the performers and workers backstage before I started working at Legends in February and it’s been nice to get to spend time with them as well. Yes, occasionally we do have time to reflect back on what happened the night before. Where do I begin with that? As you hear PLACES!

That’s the 5 minute mad dash to finish the food you were cramming down, getting that last drop of water, or finish putting on your costume as you run to your position in the theatre for show time.  When places gets called you see the mad rush to get to the stage, because at 8:00 it’s show time.

the green room

images.jpg

The “Green Room” is a room in the theater that accommodates the performers when they are not required to be on the stage…making them easily accessible for their call.

Many interpretations of the term “Green Room” have surfaced over the years, beginning with the first recorded use in 1701.

Some of those folk etymologies are:

  • Green is thought to have a calming, soothing effect
  • Long before modern makeup came along, actors had to allow their makeup to “cure”! Until it was cured, it was “green”, and actors were advised to sit in the “greening” room until their makeup was stable enough for performing.
  • The most widely accepted origin dates back to the Shakespearean theatre where Actors prepared for their performances in a “room” filled with greenery! The environment provided a moisture that was thought to be beneficial to the actor’s voice.

Contrary to popular belief, most Green Rooms are not actually green! Modern “Green Rooms” include all of the current necessities including “wireless internet”, cable TV, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.

Cecil’s World Comments

WBTW logo.jpg

Hello my name is Cecil Chandler. I have been in the radio and television business for nearly 40 years and when it comes to music I am a big fan. When I moved to Surfside Beach 8 years ago I discovered Legends in Concert and since that time I have been there more than a dozen times. It’s hard to believe that you can re-live your rock-and-roll days at one of their shows. I would like to tell you about a few of my favorite acts I have seen at Legends. I am a big Elvis fan and Ryan Pelton has his Elvis tribute down to a tee. The Blues Brothers never get old they are always funny and entertaining, the best group act I have seen at Legends is “The Temptations” they really brought the house down with the famous temptation walk and they sounded just like the real Temptations. Now what really amazed me is watching the entertainer Brain McCullough doing Roy Orbison, when he did “Crying” it took my breath away. As you can tell I am a big music fan, keep up the good work and never let the music die. This is the one show in the Myrtle Beach area that let’s you turn back the hands of time when rock and roll was king. The show of course also provides a number of other great entertainers of today but I am a fan of the oldies. P.S. I love your new web site it gives everyone a chance to see what the entertainer look like compared to the real stars.
